Be Cycle Safe!

Over the past couple of weeks, our Year 6 students have been involved in the Cycle Safe programme. This is where they get to bring their bikes and helmets to school and a team of teachers from The Christchurch City Council come to school to teach our kids.

Cycle Safe is a cycle skills education programme for schools. Our students get to learn the benefits of cycling and how to ride with confidence and be road-wise.

Christchurch's Cycle Safe Programme is considered one of the best in the country and is used as a leading delivery model. All children receive a personalised certificate highlighting their personal achievements.

The programme our children were involved with this year included;

Cycle maintenance and correct helmet fitting

Basic cycling skills

Road rules

On-road cycling.

Although very cold and a bit wet this year, we watched our year 6 students thriving out on the roads. It was so awesome to see so many bringing their bikes to school and enjoying the outdoor learning!

Have you done the cycle safe programme? What did you think about it?

Well done Korimako! We are super proud of you!

Wonderful Winter Sport

 Kia ora Bloggers,

Korimako students have begun their Winter sport journey! With all trials completed, and a few practices sessions, last Friday the 11th saw us ride the (pretty flash) buses to the Rawhiti Sports grounds.

With all our gear ready the teams, which included Netball, Hockey, Football, Ki O Rahi, Capture the Flag, Gardening, and Bowls headed off with our coaches to our games. While the weather was a bit chilly, spirits were high and all the Marshland teams were ready to play.

Teams completed one or two games during the afternoon. It was great to see everyone working and supporting each other on and off the field. Win or lose, it was an awesome start to the 2021 Winter season!

We are looking forward to the rest of the season at Rawhiti!

Has your school started Winter sport yet, and if so, what do you play?

See you next week.

Sensational Cybersmart

Over this term, Korimako has been lucky enough to have Sharon with us from Manaiakalani to teach us how to be safe online and to take care of our devices.

Our main focus for this term has been our digital footprint and learning about whatever goes online stays online forever. Korimako children have been learning to have a positive digital footprint, through the contents of:

Being a media detective: Private v's personal information. How private is your personal information, and how can you ensure it remains private. Finding things online and identifying them as safe and not safe.

Savvy sharing: SISOMO - effective advertisements using sight, sound, and motion. Making sure we are responsible for what we are sharing and showing online.

Social media: Learning the terms of each service, what you are paying for and how they use your personal information.

As well of course learning to make a quality blog post and how to use their email correctly.

Overall, we have learned so much from Sharon, and our Korimako tamariki are well set up to be safe, smart, independent learners online!!!

What does being cyber smart mean for you? Do you know how to identify when something online is unsafe for you?
